Since the film Grave of the Fireflies was released, the debate that whether the theme of the film is anti-war or not had never ended. Audience, critics and even the director himself has been entangled in this heated debate.Apparently, people fall into two groups: the anti-war-theme group and the not-anti-war-theme group. Many audiences who have experienced the war time therefore burst into quantities of tears and they are anti-war-theme big fans. However, some critics and the director of this film repeatedly denied that the film was anti-war.Personally, I hold the same opinion with the director that the focus of this film is not anti-war.

People who are in the anti-war-theme group attribute their attitude to the graphic and emotional scenes in the film that were bloody and horrible: including the scenes about dead corpse and buildings in ruins. They said they shared the same feeling with the characters in the film because they had experienced just the same horrible historical event as the characters did which
 was still left in their mind and kept appearing in front of their eyes occasionally.

However, some critics and the director himself seemed to fail to agree with this kind of opinion. According to the director, he had just intended to convey to the audience an image of two children who lived a failed life because of isolation from society so that the sympathy could be invoked especially among the people in their teens and twenties. Because the director felt obliged to straight up these people through the film and make them show respect for their elders for all the pain and suffering the elders had gone through during the undoubtedly darkest period of Japan’s history.

Personally, I hold the same opinion with the director that the focus of this film is not anti-war.

First, this film was adapted from a book of the same name so it might be helpful to refer to the book and its author. According to the author of the book, he said he wrote this book just to convey a personal apology to his own sister who died from malnutrition during the World War Two. From this point of view we can find that since the film has paid more attention to individual memories and self-releasing rather than social cynical criticism, we can hardly say that the film adapted from it has a lot to do with a deeper, more extensive, critical anti-war-theme. Although we have to admit that the books and films adapted from them do not always share the same topic, however, in this case, they do because of the high conformity they share from plot to character setting.

Second, I do not agree with the opinion that the film’s theme is anti-war just because there exist bloody and terrifying scenes in this film. As well known, this film is set during the World War Two a war time. Therefore to depict the story more credibly, bloody and terrifying scenes in the war serve as a fundamental and indispensable role. Even though this kind of scenes exist, we can not say that they are thus the main trend or the theme of the film. In addition, it is not difficult for us to find that the film never focus on what horrible destruction the war has caused and how deeply the people detest the war. Instead, the director spends most of the time depicting the two children: Seita and Setsuko, just like what the director himself said: I had just intended to convey an image of the brother and sister living a failed life due to isolation from society and invoke sympathy particularly in people in their teens and twenties, whom I felt needed to straighten up and respect their elders for the pain and suffering they had experienced during arguably the darkest point in Japan’s history. From this, we can also say that the horrible war scenes exist to beautify and accentuate the two innocent and pure lives.   

However, of course we have to admit that in this film we can feel the cruelty of the war and that we do feel sorry for Seita and Setsuko’s death and perhaps therefore denounce and accuse of the war. But as far as I am concerned, it is exactly what the films have in common of which the plots are set in a war time. But every film set in a war time has its focus and hence not every film set in a war time has to be an anti-war-theme film.

In my opinion, people who regard this film as an anti-war-theme film fail to distinguish the film’s theme from their own emotion. Many of them themselves have experienced the war time so it is unavoidable that they would feel more impressed and sentimental while watching the film. Since the film is adapted from a semi-autobiographical which is based on real people and real events, the audience’s empathy towards the war time might be easier to be aroused and thus the audience might be easily overwhelmed by their emotion. In this way, since the audience have been manipulated by their own emotion, it is understandable that the audience mix their own emotion with the theme of the film.

The first time I know ang lee is because of a movie “wedding banquet”, which is a popular play about traditional ethics, entirely in Hollywood Chinese movie. If i remember clearly, it was a summer vacation ,my brother and i watched this film together.My brother is Lee’s fans .He said Lee is crazy about adventuring, take “wedding banquet” as an example,the story is in Chinese sensitive topic – gay and lesbian issues, but he hold was in place, he used the Chinese unique ethical point of view to deal with this problem, made the tragedy turned into comedy, and won the audience’s consistent high praise

After entering university, in the classroom of “analysis of the film” ,he teacher told us that “crouching tiger, hidden dragon” is his writing career of watershed, and there are big differences in his early movie.In early movie ,he give priority to family and the father-son relationship.And start from the “crouching tiger, hidden dragon”, lee unconsciously into the subconscious level. In his middle age, the love, desire, all take turns from “crouching tiger, hidden dragon”, “brokeback mountain”, and rushed out of “lust, caution”. Here, I would like to briefly introduce three films. “Crouching tiger, hidden dragon” is the Chinese martial arts kung fu, but there is no general martial arts films that thrive of heroism, instead of looking for runescape humanities connotation of a kind of deep thinking and reserved; “Brokeback mountain” is about the complicated relationship between two men love and sex; “Lust, caution” is more than the 40 s of Shanghai during the Anti-Japanese War as the background, tells the female college students turns (tang wei) using beauty close to Mr Yi (Tony leung) intention to assassinate the traitors. In “lust, caution”, Ang lee directly omit metaphor, indirect expression, to directly enter the body entanglements to echo the characters’ inner struggle and external situation changes, this is really too shocked, too attractive. But it was banned by the Chinese,and the reason is not civilization. In fact, in my opinion, even if lee does not make the film “lust, caution”, he also can choose other subjects to express their inner change. It is interesting to note that ang lee fighting the sex scenes in the movie always entangled, even some traces of abuse. Like Luo Xiaohu in “crouching tiger, hidden dragon,” Li Mubai with jade jiaolong, in “broke back mountain,” jack and ennis, If you only see pictures of ang lee, you absolutely can’t imagine his heart will have a really love, love deeper, but unfortunately the world of love. But I think this is what I am willing to take the time to understand the secrets of his work.

What the deepest impression on me is a sentence said by Lee,” if a story is insufficient scary, sensitive, I’m afraid it can not attract me.” I Can’t fully understand until last year when I begun to try to write a movie script, I totally understood if a story is black and white, the writers are not attracted, so how to attract the photographer, the actor and the audience? As far as i known,there are a lot of romantic stories appeared in the films of ang lee, but in real life, he had a very happy family.For the reason that something can not be achieved in real life, moved to the big screen display. So, i what the safest thing is risk in the movie.

When I first met a British person, I feel like a gentle wind in such a high temperature. They are so kind that we had no trouble interacting. For the students from the University of Ulster, the language was as hard to pick up as were all the new dishes with chopsticks. They were tying Chinese knots around themselves instead of making the bracelets as shown. The food in China comes in many different shapes, sizes and flavours, sometimes shocking to the bland british palate. The Chinese have many ways to cook, including frying, steaming, boiling and so on. So we students in schools can choose indeed different food we like eating, and we all have different tastes. In Ireland, we have…the potato. New to us as well was the integrative nature of a meal. A spinning table?

This was just another aspect of the culture for which nothing could have prepared us. Culture is a word we’re constantly hearing, and the Chinese culture is without a doubt as rich as their food. Every aspect of daily life has an underlying meaning, a story behind it, a tradition… Culture here is real and definite, almost tangible. Whereas the culture in the UK is a more subtle thing where the food and people don’t see or appreciate it as much in their every day life as the Chinese people. It’s inspiring and thought-provoking and sometimes terrifying, as is the driving.

Despite of our differences, we still find things to connect us and we believe that different habits, styles,tastes and kinds of differences between us make the world colourful and also we’ll love the two countries more than before.

Nowadays, it is obvious that Chinese has strong purchasing power. Thus, in the development of tourism, shopping gradually plays a necessary role in economy. This way even turns into a means of forced shopping.

Once I traveled in Japan, my purpose was simple to feel different culture and met different kinds of people during the trip. At the beginning of the trip, the guide was warm-heart  and told us many anecdotes. To be honest, I fall in love with the journey. But after this, the guide acted as a seller on the bus. And he showed many goods to us and expected us buy some. Finally, but none of us bought the goods. And then, the guide got angry with us. The tour guide’s behavior was beyond the scope of duties, and it directly affected my good moods. What a terrible trip!

And when I traveled the U.S, shopping and tourism, I felt the former seems to be more important for Chinese. People were crowded in the mall like outlets, and the luxury gave me a kind of illusion like cheap goods. Actually, most buyers do not know how to purchase and also do not know the culture of brands. The causes of this phenomenon are the expensive tariffs in China and Chinese tradition of giving gifts. These goods are sold at a high price because of their unique brand culture, history and value. Today, I will take you to go to a mysterious and beautiful memorable place called Qinghai.It’s next to Tibet, belongs to the Tibetan area. Over there, even in the heat of summer, you can see the local tibetans wear long robes, we use a sentence to describe their dress: “wear a hand, leave a hand”, means that the robes they wore outside usually dress only one sleeve, the reason is the high altitudes, the different of temperature between morning and night is very large,there also in strong illumination, so you can always see their tan dark face, but, their eyes are not dark,they are bright and beaming of religious belief.

There has the famous monastery of Tibetan Buddhism – kumbum monastery(“kumbum” is from tibeban language), the birthplace of  Tsong Kha-pa, the founder of the yellow sect, is one of the six major lamaseries of yellow sect in Tibetan Buddhism. Now the monastery’s commercialization is serious, but occasionally, you may see few devout believers, still making one-stone-bow pilgrimage to there. You can enter the temple, looking for the secret of Tibetan Buddhism, have a taste of the different architectural features. In order to memory Quyuan, they cast zongzi into the lake and we also tasted the delicious zongzi. We really spent a happy and colorful time there. I expect the next time to visit HangZhou.
