I don’t know how to choose a book!

There are thousands of books in the bookstore, and you may find it difficult to choose a good book. I will tell you how to make it easy.

By: Mengyi Lu 120905338 Class2

I_don’t_know_how_to_choose_a_bookIf you go to the bookstore, you will find thousands of books sitting on the bookshelf. You look at them, but don’t know which one to choose. It’s hard to tell a book is good or not just through its name. I’ll share some experience about how to select a good book with you.

When I was in primary school and junior school, our teacher would give us a list of classic books and suggested us to buy one or two. I really don’t like to read classic books at that time. They are old, boring and hard to realize. But why are they been recommended by so many people if they are worthless. You can’t deny that those classic books have stood the test of time. If you really have trouble in reading classic books, maybe you can wait. I remember a scholar once said that he didn’t like reading Analects of Confucius when he was young, but he finally accepted it in his middle age.

I don’t like reading books when I was a little girl. I began to love reading books after I read a book written by Yingtai Long. Then I bought all her books to read. What I want to say is when you are attracted by a book, it’s a good idea to buy the author’s other books. You will not only read her or his other good work, but also know more about the author’s style of writing. If a writer wrote an excellent book, then her or his other books won’t be very bad in general. I used this method to select books, and it worked every time.

In order to sell more books, sometimes the publisher will put advertising slogans on the cover of the book. It is not wise to believe the slogans entirely, sometimes they are exaggerated. So who will give you a honest review of a book, I think is our teacher and other readers who have read the book. Moreover, sometimes your favorite writer would quote sentences or stories from other books. I suggest you to read those books, because that means as your favorite writer seems highly of those books, those books are worth reading.

I once watched a TV program about reading books. Some people recommended the books they read. I remember there was a reading club, members of the club gathered once a week to share feelings of the book. If there is a reading club around you, try to join it. You will make friends with people who have the same hobby with you, and you will be able to select a proper book after the gathering.

Sometimes, you don’t know a writer until he or she win a prize in literature. I didn’t know Mo Yan before, but after he won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature, I bought all his novels. After I read his work, I finally realized that he deserved it. So if you have trouble in choosing books, it’s a good idea to read a prize-winning work sometimes.

With the development of the Internet, there are different kinds of websites provide help for different people. Goodreads is a website created for people who love reading books. Thousands of books are listed on the website. Once you click the cover page of the book, you will see a brief introduction of the book. And there are lots of comments written by other readers below to help you decide whether the book is worth reading or not. What’s more, there are some tips which make Goodreads cleverer.

First, you can add friends to see their latest reads. Reading is more fun when shared. Second, you can rate books you’ve read to get recommendations. Rate 20 books and Goodreads will learn your tastes. Third, you will be able to find and add books to your shelves. Search by title, author, ISBN, or list.

In a word, although there are millions of books in the world, you will always find the proper one for yourself as long as you try to. I think reading books is very important in my life. A good book is just like a teacher who can impart me knowledge. I have used the methods above to select myself proper books, I hope my methods can help you too.

Life is a long journey, leads to your destiny

“We all have two lives… The life we know and another one, that lies waiting for us.”

Do you believe in destiny? Maybe not. Then, have you ever confused about your life path? Have you ever doubted on the decisions you used to make? I bet you have, we all do. Then you may find an answer in the book “The Strange Journey Of Mr. Daldry”.

By: Zhang Yao  110909221  Class 2

The story is about a young perfume mixer Alice, she is really passionate about what she is doing yet she living an ordinary prosaic life. Usually she spends the late night chatting with her friends but received much complaints from her cantankerous neighbor Mr. Daldry. During an outing to Brighton on Christmas Eve a fortuneteller’s words completely changed Alice’s life. Alice has never believed in soothsayers or destiny but she cannot stop thinking about the old woman’s words. Later Alice starts her adventure to Istanbul accompanied by Mr. Daldry.

Open this book, it makes me kind of feeling like start an adventure of myself. Sometimes word has the power to attract you in and at that moment, it’s you, standing by Alice, with all beautiful scenery filled in eyes. Marc Levy the delicate brushwork of the picturesque scenes in Istanbul make it so real. You can smell the flowers and spices in a single word, you can see the crowd and winding streets in each line, even you can hear the bustle of hawkers, a hubbub from the crowd. After meeting six men, love leads Alice to Mr. Daldry and finally found out her lost past. So, the opinion in this novel is quite interesting, seems like in an instant, a little decision could twist your life to an entirely disparate situation.

Life Is A Long Journey, Leads To Your Destiny—— The Strange Journey Of Mr. Daldry1

After finishing the book, I just can not stop to think about my own life, how I made all my decisions and is that the power lead me to this way, make me who I am. Is there really an another life waiting for me? But now let’s just imagine, one day when you are walking on the street, someone comes along to your way, suddenly, you feel so familiar and comfortable about this guy, you even thinking about say hi to him and see what will happen. But you hesitate, you act like it’s stupid and there is no such thing as destiny. So you smile at each other and then, just walk away. Time goes by, life become dull and utterly pointless. Memories take you back to old days, somehow that smile crossed your mind, and you just realized as the moment you passed by, a same feelings on his face, strange but familiar.

Or maybe like this, when you still young, you try to adventure, try to do something different, yet your parents and friends persuade you like you are trying to ruin your life. So you think, maybe this is your fate, maybe this is how life goes. After years and years, you found there are some people, live a more liberal life you dreamed about. So you start thinking that if there was a chance you could live a totally different life. If you had picked the other way, maybe now you are climbing the Alps, feeling the wind fight on your face, hurt but real, touching the snow on the ground, cold but pure, not sitting in the couch, eating popcorn and watching the boring shows . If you had chosen the another path, maybe now you are walking along la seine, watching the sunrise, waiting for the sunset. Your life may filled with conversations and daydreaming, travel and adventure, pleasantly surprised in carelesslydescends. Not standing behind the window watching people going by, sighing of your life and you deserve a better one.

So you see, where your road leads, determined by every moment you are experiencing. What I’m deeply thinking about is if every point could be the bend in the road, what can be your guiding light through this long and winging life? You may still not believe destiny, but I’ll say what you are doing is your destiny. It is not arranged by anyone but your heart. I Truly believe the anther life do exist but the only one thing could indicate you is to follow your heart, live your life. It is simply to say but many people could not do it even once in their whole life. So just think even for one minute, listen to your inner voice, are you willing to let others eyes erode your life, or following your heart into your freewheeling world.

Will paper books be replaced by e-books one day?

Nowadays a lot of people read books on their electrical products. Some fans of e-books assert that paper books will be replaced by e-books one day.

By: Mengyi Lu 120905338 Class 2

Will_paper_books_be_replaced_by_e-books_one_day 1I have noticed this situation for a while that a lot of people read books on their electrical products like iPad, computer, mobile phone, or kindle. We can’t deny that these products make our reading so convenient that some fans of e-books assert that paper books will be replaced by e-books one day. Actually, I’m a fan of paper books and I’m confident that paper books will exist forever.

Remember there was an article said that as more and more people prefer to read e-books, some book stores found it difficult to survive. I was a little ashamed that I used to read e-books more than paper books in order to save money. There are a lot of free e-books on the internet, and I can download the one I want for free. How nice! But deep down in my heart, I still prefer paper books. I read e-books just because I was poor. As I have more pocket money now, I bought a lot of paper books and almost stopped reading e-books. Paper books bring me more happiness when I am reading. There are some reasons that why I love reading paper books so much.

First, reading paper books won’t harm eyesight that much. I still firmly believe that my eyesight was damaged by reading books on my iPod. Yes, my iPod. The screen was so small that made my reading so hard. Moreover, you can turn back to any page you want immediately when you read a paper book which cannot be achieved easily on e-books.

Additionally, it is safer to read paper books. If you read on an electrical product, you have to worry about whether your product will run out of power, or be stolen by thief, and you won’t be able to keep reading. But if you read a paper book, you won’t need to worry about it.

What’s more, if there is a series of books which was written by your favorite writer and has this really beautiful cover. Do you want to read the e-books or buy them home, read them, and make them a collection?  I’d like to choose the second one. As time goes by, you will find your bookcase filled with books and you will see how many books you have read.

I did some research before I began to write this story. And I found this interesting article written by Rich Adin. He listed seven advantages of paper books in his article The buying conundrum: paper book or e-book?   And I excerpted these points below.

  1. When I buy a paper book, I own it; when I buy an e-book, I rent it.
  2. Paper books are resalable on a secondary market and/or rise in value as they become scarce; e-books are never scarce and have no secondary market in which I can recoup some of my investment.
  3. Nonfiction paper books tend to be less expensive to purchase than the e-book version and are available for significantly less on the legal secondary market, which includes the legal remainders market.
  4. Paper books can legally be cooperatively bought, thereby reducing the price to individuals even further (I have bought in cooperation with my son several books over the years that we have shared the purchase cost of).
  5. My paper books can be lent to other readers innumerable times; if I’m lucky, an e-book can be lent once for 2 weeks to another reader (after being lent that one time, the e-book cannot be lent again to anyone).
  6. Once I buy a paper book it remains mine; unlike the e-book, no one can remotely remove the paper book, replace the paper book, or do anything that interferes with my ownership of the paper book.
  7. As my collection of hard covers grows, I, too, may run into the space situation. At that point, I can reevaluate my paper books and remove some from my collection, and I either sell them on the secondary market (see 3) or, more likely, I can donate them to my local library, which is happy to obtain them as they are in pristine condition, giving me a charitable contribution deduction on my taxes at the fair market value, which is the average price in the used book market. I can’t sell or donate no-longer-wanted e-books to anyone, let alone to my local library.

Papermaking is one of the Four Great inventions of ancient China. We made paper books to carry our history, to record our civilization and we ought to be proud of it. Although I can’t deny that e-books bring us convenience and it really changed our lives, it doesn’t mean that we can abandon paper books.

There is a bookcase in our dormitory and it is almost filled with books. Everyone came to our dormitory would say how marvelous it was, it made us so happy. If you want to borrow a book from us, go and find us. Let’s support paper books and make its future bright.

Fantastic beasts in a fantastic world

Fantastic beasts in a fantastic world

Today I want to share an interesting book with you. The name of this funny book is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It is written by J.K.Rowling and she chose a really special way to write it. There is a note “Property of: Harry Potter” on the cover and the writer’s name is Newt Scamander rather than Rowling.

By: Zhang Yarou 110909237 Class 2

Why the cover like this? Open the book then we can find the reason. The thing is Rowling created a person named Newton Artemis Fido Scamander to write this book. In this book, Newton “Newt” is an expert of fabulous beasts, his interest in this part was encouraged by his mother, an enthusiastic breeder of fancy Hippogriffs. After graduation from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he joined the Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

Newt has visited lairs, burrows, and nests across five continents, observed the curious habits of magical beasts in a hundred countries. This book represents the fruit of many years’ travel and research. Till now Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is in its fifty-second edition (previous editions absolutely only published in the magic world) and it has been an approved textbook at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry ever since its publication.

This edition is a duplicate of Harry Potter’s own copy of Fantastic Beasts, complete with his and his friends’ informative notes in the margins. The best part is twenty percent of the retail sales price less taxes from the sale of this book will go to the fund set up in Harry Potter’s name by Comic Relief U.K. and J.K.Rowling. This fund was designed specifically to help children in need throughout the world.

In the introduction, Newt explained some questions to readers. First one is what is a “beast”? In the history of wizards, they had holden meetings three times to defined “beasts”. At the very beginning, they decreed that any member of the magical community that walked on two legs would henceforth be granted the status of “beings”, all others to remain “beasts”. Goblins, pixies and fairies made crammed the meeting hall and everything was in a mess. Then they redefine “beings” were those who could speak the human tongue. But Trolls, ghosts and Jarveys can also speak human tongue, the meeting became a disaster again. Finally, they decreed that a “being” was “any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws”. Thanks to this, we now have a clear definition to “beings” and “beasts”.

The second question is why don’t Muggles notice these creatures. Well, some species have their own effective means of camouflage, like the Tebo, the Demiguise, and the Bowtruckle. Some beasts, due to cleverness or innate shyness, avoid contact with Muggles at all costs, as the unicorn, the Mooncalf and the centaur. Other magical creatures inhabit places inaccessible to Muggles. Some creatures are just to small to be seem. Those beasts don’t fit with above situations manage by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

Have more interesting in fabulous beasts? Just read the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It recorded 75 species fantastic creatures, you will have a deeper realize of the magic world in Harry Potter.

Be a journalist, see the changes of China during the ten years behind news

Be-a-journalist,see-the-changes-of-China-behind-news

To see is an autobiographical book of a well-known journalist Chai Jing. At least 1.5 million of the books had been sold. It’s a big number for a writer in China. It tells Chai’s growth in CCTV and changes of China during the recent decade by a journalist view. Ten years ago she was chosen to become the national television news anchor. Because of inexperienced, she suffered defeat. Nowadays she becomes a famous reporter, after a decade’s experience.

Do you remember SARS in 2003? It’s a big catastrophe. We think doctors and nurse are heroes at that time. But we forget people who reported these are also heroes. In this book, Chai recalled the things in this book.

In April of 2003, SARS became more serious that make people panic. The fear of people comes from unknown situation. The best way to know all of the things is going to first-line to interview. But when she saw patients at first time, she was frightened. People who get SARS lay on the bed without any expression. At that time she knew what desperation is. The deathly silence made her uncomfortable. “You can smell the smell of death” Chai said. By her report, the public begin to know how situation is.

When faced with disaster, people recognize the preciousness of life. Chai and her colleges lived in a hotel. There were no people in the hotel, even the staffs in the hotel had gone to their hometown. Chai and her colleges begin to think whether they may get SARS. The heart beat make she felt that life is so real. She received a message from an unknown number: I’m very pride of your courage. If you get SARS, I will marry you.

Fortunately, she and her colleges were safe. But many doctors got SARS in one hospital. She went there to investigate what happened in this hospital. A doctor who worked in this hospital told her there were not well protection at that time. “And what did you use to protect yourselves?” Chai asked. “Only courage” the doctor said sadly. 75 people got SARS and 45 of them died.

During ten years, there were many things happened in China. SARS, Earthquake in Wunchuan, Beijing Olympic Games ,etc. Through these things,China is growing. Chai is also growing as a journalist.

Chai is a good journalist because she cares about people in news. She is patient and listen them carefully. Another reason is that she is an objective. “There are not good man and bad man in this world. There only people who do good things or bad things” Chai’s college told her .As a journalist you should bring fact to audiences. Many journalists like to guide audiences to get more attention. It’s wrong. People have their right to analyze an event. In this way, people will become more independent and freedom and countries will become more democratic. Journalists are eyes of people and conscience of a country.

“It’s an excellent book. I recommended this book to my friends.” An Internet user from Amazon said. You will not want to miss it, if you want to see something invisible behind news and view the world wisely like a journalist. You can visit Douban for more information about the book.
